Using iChat
iChat is a wonderful way to communicate! It let’s you easily stay in touch with friends and family and all for free! The first thing that you will need is to create an IM account. IM stands for instant message, which is what an ichat is. Go ahead and open up ichat, the icon should already be on your dock. You’ll get a welcome message the first time you open it, click continue. Account Setup, this is where you will set up your screen name. If you already have a mobileme account, or .mac account or AIM account, then go ahead and enter the information here. Otherwise, you need to create a new account, so click on get an iChat account. Go ahead and fill out the necessary information. Pick a screen name, that is the name that people will enter to find you. Once you are finished, return to ichat to enter the info. Enter the information and click continue, then you're done. Once it connects you, you’ll notice that it says available here. That means you are online and other people who know your screen name can click on you to start a chat. Just click this plus sign at the bottom and then add buddy. To initiate a chat simply double click on the person’s name and type something, when you are finished typing, hit return to send. At this point the other person needs to accept your chat invitation and then you can chat back and forth! If you start up ichat and your friends names are greyed out in the offline section, this means that they are not online and you can’t chat with them. Both people need to be online, meaning the computer is on, you have an internet connection and you both have iChat open, in order to talk. If both people have web cams, either built in or external, then you will see a video icon next to that person’s name. To initiate a video chat simply click on the video icon next to their name and wait for them to accept.
