Understanding the Desktop
One of the most important concepts you will learn as a beginner is the idea of “the desktop.” When you turn your computer on, or log in, the first thing you will see is the “desktop.” Think of it as your home base. It is also referred to as the “finder” or “desktop.” It contains everything you need to access anything on your computer, including icons, menus and windows. This entire screen area is considered the desktop You will find the menu bar up at the top, your Macintosh hard drive over on the right and the dock at the bottom. You will learn more about each of these in later lessons, as well as how to customize your desktop.
